My 1st roll of the New Kodak Ektachrome … all 36 frames

I have shot most of the available and discontinued slide films over the years and processed them in E6 and cross processed in C41 and it never fails to give you a great feeling holding up some slides to the light.

So obviously when Kodak announced that they were bringing back Ektachrome I couldn’t wait to get some to play with.

Once I bought a few rolls I decided to load the 1st roll into my Nikon F100 as it gives me pretty much spot on exposures when I shoot slide film.

As you can see from the 1st shot on the roll I began shooting on March 30th and I took about 4 months to complete the roll as I wanted to try it on a range of subjects and lighting conditions.

I had the film developed & scanned by AG Photographic as I didn’t want to mess up the developing and get unreliable results.

I have to say the film lived up to my expectations … colours and sharpness were great and even shooting into the sun worked, also portraits came out good too.

So here is the complete roll in the order that I shot them … comments welcomed.

Testing some Kodak 5325 Commercial Internegative film …..

I was kindly given a roll of Kodak 5325 a while back from a fellow Twitter photographer which I had forgotten about until I came across it the other week and after a little bit of research on the interwebs I realised that I could process it myself as it was C41 so I went out on a lovely bright day with my Pentax Program A and gave it a try.

Kodak internegative is supposed to make color negative copies of slides for reproduction also I was led to believe that it may even be Tungsten balanced and an iso rating of 8-50 ish depending on lighting conditions.

I decided against any filters and shot half the roll at iso 25 and the rest at 50 just to see what came out.

The first thing that I noticed was a very strong “Light Leak” which I initially believed may have been my camera but after messaging my film donor he said that a few of the rolls that he tried came out similarly to mine so I breathed a sigh of relief that my trusty Pentax was fine ( I shot another roll of Fuji 200 to test the next day)

The images with the light leak were very pleasing I actually like the look and I don’t think they spoil the images.

There was quite a varied colour cast throughout the roll and some frames were a lot cooler than others which I thought was the different iso settings but that was not the case as they were mixed through the roll and I shot the 1st 10 images at 25 followed by 50 iso for the remainder.

I could have colour balanced all the images in Lightroom but decided to just leave them as they were.

If I get any more of this film I would definitely shoot it at 25 iso or less as all the original scans were slightly underexposed which was sorted in Lightroom.

Fuji Sensia 200 expired and scanning twice …..

I am really slacking with my photography this year … so far I have only managed to shoot 8 rolls and 3 of them were for the #fp4party.

I know that equates to 1 per week but this ratio is pretty poor for me and my blogging is also behind.

So this week I am hoping to get at least 2 posts done just to catch up …. here is the 1st … A roll of Fuji Sensia 200 that expired back in 2004 that I shot on a pretty dull afternoon using the Olympus OM2s, Zuiko 50mm f1.4 and developed using the Tetenal E6.

After development and subsequent scanning using the Epson v500 all the images had a slight magenta cast and due to a nasty curl quite a few frames didn’t appear very sharp.

So after deciding on which frames that I liked I rescanned them using the Plustek Opticfilm 8100 and Silverfast 8 software which gave far better results especially the sharpness due to the better film holder which keeps the film so much flatter.

I am not really sure if the magenta cast was due to my dev going off or just the film itself but it was very easy to remove in Lightroom.

Anyway here is a selection from the roll … there are a few shots containing Daffodil’s (National flower of Wales) which are blooming nice and early this year also my Obligatory end of roll Peg shot 🙂

Lomography Color Negative 400 is becoming my most favorite colour film …

I recently did a post about my 1st time shooting Lomography Color Negative 400 film in 35mm and this is a sort of follow up or my 2nd roll if you like.

This time the light was pretty dull unlike the bright sunshine I enjoyed with the 1st roll but I was good as it allowed a comparison with similar subject matter.

It would be fair to say that the film performed just as good in poor light as it did in bright sunshine giving excellent sharpness even shooting at wide apertures using my Olympus OM2s & 50mm f1.4.

The colours are still pretty vibrant just a little more subtle which lends itself to maybe shooting portraits which I think will be my next subject with this film.

This film is excellent value costing around £4 a roll in the UK here is a link direct to the Lomography site but a quick Google search will bring up some even cheaper prices.

“Kevin Sinnott” .. Reflecting on a life in painting exhibition

On Sunday 3rd December I was invited to the opening of reknown Artist and friend Kevin Sinnott’s 70th birthday exhibition Reflecting on a life in painting.

It was held at his gallery “Studio 18” here in Pontycymer where it featured his most famous painting “Running away with the hairdresser” which was kindly loaned back to him by the National Museum of Wales for the length of this exhibition.

The exhibition runs until January 21st 2018 and is well worth a visit.

Autumn turns to winter on Fuji Reala 500D …

I have had a roll of Fuji Reala 500D sitting in my fridge for ages waiting patiently for me to try and the other week I decided to give it a go just to see how the colours compare with the last few rolls of different films where I have tried shooting the autumn colours here in the South Wales valleys. As usual here in Wales the weather is always a lottery and this roll features lovely autumn sunshine followed by thunderous conditions and heavy rain.

To be fair the light didn’t really make much difference to how this film looked, it had quite a muted palette which really complimented how the images actually were as it was just about winter really.

I was tempted to tweak the colours in Lightroom after my initial scans thinking that they were too bland but after my dust removal and slight exposure tweaks I realised that I really liked the subtle look.

I must admit that I really love this film so much so I bought a load last week and will be shooting it quite regularly in the future as it is a pretty versatile colour stock especially being iso 500 with not a lot of grain either.

Expired Fuji Sensia 400 after the rain …

I only just realised while backing up my Lightroom catalogs that I had forgotten to post this blog which should have been posted before the Ektachrome 2 parter.

As I may have mentioned in my previous posts that I have some mixed E6 chemistry that I want to use up before it goes off so my last few rolls have been slide film. I have quite a few different slide stocks stored in my fridge and the day I shot this we had just had a huge downpour and I was not really sure whether or not the rain would come back so I loaded up some Sensia 400 rated at 320 iso into my Olympus OM10 for a change as I haven’t used this camera for years, I usually use either the OM2s or OM1n when I want to go down the Olympus route.

I paired it up with the lovely Zuiko 50mm f1.4 that I managed to pick up recently. Lucky for me the rain held off for a while and the sun peaked out to give a nice warm look to the Sensia.

Autumn colours with Kodak Ektachrome E100VS … part 2

Following on from my last post the day after shooting Ektachrome in 120 I loaded up my F100 with the 35mm version and headed out to see how it compared.

As with the 1st roll I set the meter to iso 80 but used a bit of exposure compensation on a few shots not to have muddy shadows.The first thing that was apparent was how much more Red the images were compared to the 120, both films were obviously expired the 120 was 2012 and this roll was 2009.

I am not sure how this roll was stored before I received it (it was a gift from a twitter photographer friend) but the previous roll had been fridge stored from new. That said I don’t think it harmed the look of the images in fact I quite like the overall Red feel.

There was a very slightly more pronounced grain compared to the 120 but if I had not shot/processed the roll the day before to have an instant comparison I don’t think I would have really noticed. The sharpness was pretty much identical even when I was shooting at f2.8 (it was too bright to get wide open at f1.4) Overall I was very happy with both rolls and I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the new re-issued version as soon as it comes out.

Autumn colours with Kodak Ektachrome E100VS … part 1

For a change usually when I get a nice long weekend off be it summer or winter I always seem to pick the days with rubbish weather but luckily for me last weekend I got a good one.

As I still have my Tetenal E6 kit mixed from the end of the summer I decided to shoot some slide film before the chemistry went off.

As I had not shot Ektachrome for ages and with Kodak hopefully bringing back the emulsion shortly I decided to shoot 2 rolls over 2 days in both 120 and 35mm ( which will be in part 2).I went out mid Sunday morning with the Yashicamat 124G hoping to catch some nice light on the autumn leaves/trees.The light did not disappoint and maybe for the 1st time ever I managed to get 12 keepers from a roll of 120.

I set the meter at 80 iso and tried to meter for the shadows hoping not to blow the highlights too much. When shooting in bright sunlight the colours really pop really enhancing the autumn colours I can’t wait to get my hands on the “New” Ektachrome when it eventually appears.
