Lomography Babylon 13 Kino film .. Overcast day and no tripod .. let’s go for it ….

Everytime there is a new film released onto the market I always try to get a roll or two to try.

So when Lomography announced the Babylon 13 and Fantome 8 kino films I immediately purchased some.

As they are 8 & 13 iso respectively and as I have a slight aversion to using tripods I have been waiting for the brighter weather to return here in Wales.

Last weekend the weather was looking pretty nice for a change so I dug out a camera that I have not used in ages .. my Ricoh X-RX and the Pentax 50mm f1.7 & 35mm f3.5 and proceeded out to my usual haunts here in the Garw valley.

By the time I was ready to leave it began clouding over but I had loaded the film so I went up the mountain anyway hoping that I would have enough light to be able to had hold at reasonable apertures.

As it turned out I only got to f5.6 once with most of the shots either wide open or f4 at best.

On my return I checked the massive dev app to see what I could develop it with and decided on ilfotecHC 1+31 dilution for 9 minutes.

The negatives looked fine out of the tank if slightly underexposed at first glance.

When dry and I cut them into strips for scanning it was apparent that this is a very curly film stock so I was imagining problems with my Epson v500 but apart from a few frames that I had to manually locate rather than the thumbnail scan method it went well.

Once into Lightroom the film was a revelation .. I was expecting soft, dark images due to not being able to stop down and hand holding at 1/30 sec but no .. the images had bags of detail and plenty of tone in both highlight and shadow areas.

The grain was pretty much non existent which is expected from such a low iso film but still it was nice to see.

Would I recommend this film stock? … definitely I would but with the caveat that you need good light or a tripod to get the best results even though I seemed to get lucky on this occasion I think as the Pentax 28mm f3.5 is a really sharp lens even wide open and the metering on the Ricoh did an excellent job too.

Well here is almost the whole roll as I bracketed a few frames so had multiples of certain images.

An Evening walk with some Lomo CN 400 & Fuji GW690III

Short and sweet blog post today featuring a recent evening walk with my “Texas Leica” .. my actual Leica M2 has had to go to camera hospital due to a shutter curtain problem but that’s another story.

The other week after work I spotted some pretty nice light here in the Garw valley so popped out to fire off a roll of my favorite colour negative film at the minute … Lomography CN400 in the wonderful GW690III.

I didn’t walk far and to my surprise shot all 8 frames in the space of 30 minutes.

Even though the Fuji is a bit of a beast it handles really well and it is so easy to treat it like an oversized point & shoot sometime.

Well here is the whole roll … nothing really special just the Garw valley in nice light 🙂

Lomography CN800 at night … 1st blog of 2020 …..

My goto colour negative film over the last 18 months has been Lomo CN400 … I love the colours and the grain/sharpness.

I have also tried some CN100 which is almost as nice but not as versatile being a 100 iso film especially here in South Wales during winter.

So I thought it was about time to try out the CN800 as I really like how the images look when researching the colours on the web.

As it happens the day I loaded up my Nikon F100 we had a night out on the town which was perfect to see how it performed in pretty low light.

The roll was developed and scanned by the brilliant FilmDev ….

Here is a selection from the roll … I really love how the colours pop, so much so I have bought a few more packs and also some in 120 format.

1st time shooting Lomography Potsdam Kino 100 ….

It’s great that in the last few months there has been a few new film stocks hitting the market which can only be good for us film shooters.

Potsdam Kino is a B&W cine film along the lines of the Berlin Kino film that was launched previously by Lomography.

It is 100 iso film with a supposedly wide exposure latitude according to reports on the interwebs so I loaded up my Mamiya C330 on an overcast yet quite bright day and went out to see how it performed.

I developed it in ID11 1+1 dilution for 7 minutes.

The negatives looked great out of the tank .. nice and punchy looking contrast and pretty sharp at first glance.

Once scanned and into lightroom a was pleased to say very little editing was required as the scans yielded excellent shadow and highlight detail and apart from slightly bringing down the highlights and pushing the shadows a bit they looked great, contrasty and sharp.

I have some in 35mm format which I am looking forward to trying just to see if I get the same results as sometimes I find it a bit harder to pull out detail in the shadow areas when using 35mm compared to 120.

So if you like punchy/contrasty/sharp images with minimum grain then give this film a go and you won’t be disappointed.

1st roll of Lomochrome Purple XR 100-400 in the Yashicamat 124G … all 12 frames

Following on from my last post where I shot my 1st roll of the new Kodak Ektachrome showing all 36 frames … today’s post features Lomochrome Purple in 120.

I was pretty excited to try this film as I loved the look of most of the posts that I have seen on the internet.

I was concerned that I may end up with a roll of pink images rather than purple so I took some hints and shot it at 200 iso on a bright day and focused on predominantly green subject matter as I had heard that this gave more purple images.

I had the developing/scanning done by my fav lab FilmDev with an added note that I would prefer purple over pink when it came to the scanning.

I was well happy with the results which did lean more to the subtle purple side but there was a variation in some of the skies with some looking almost monochrome while others had a slight yellow/green tint.

The grain and sharpness was excellent ….

100mm focal length as a walkabout lens ……..

I have had my Canon FD 100mm f2.8 for ages but I have never really given it a proper runout, I have shot less than 20 frames with it in total so just to try and give my photography a different slant I decided to shoot a whole roll just at 100mm.

I mounted it on my Canon T90 and loaded up a roll of the lovely Lomo CN400 and went out for a walk.

Viewing the world at 100mm was a bit strange at 1st with a lot of backing up with the compositions but after a bit I started to get used to it.

I decided to get the roll developed and scanned by Filmdev and when the scans arrived I was very happy with the results, Lomo CN400 colours especially in good light are gorgeous.

To be fair the lens isn’t the sharpest wide open at f2.8 but still looked great and focussed spot on most of the time.

It was fun just shooting at this focal length it definitely puts a different perspective on my usual look, I need to take this lens out a bit more whenever I use any of my Canon FD cameras.

I have an FD adapter for my Fuji X cameras so I may give it a go on one of them next.

February 2019 #FP4Party .. All my images together …..

This is the 2nd #FP4Party of the year and this time I managed to shoot 2 rolls of FP4 with 2 different cameras.

I tried out my recent purchase the “Lomography Fisheye 35mm” as well as my trusty Mamiya 645.

I was very happy to find out that 3 of my images were shortlisted this month ….

Diana F Pinhole shooting on Lomo Color Negative 400…

This year it is my intention to shoot more so called LoFi images.

I enjoyed my time shooting with the Littlest Holga and since modifying my own Holga so now I can actually get some usable images (see blog post from a few weeks back) I love the look and feel the plastic cameras can achieve.

So over Christmas I loaded up my Diana F with some Lomography Color Negative 400 and shot the roll in Pinhole mode.

The light was pretty consistent as I was checking with my light meter which gave me an approximate shutter time of 10 seconds after looking up cloudy days and Diana pinhole on the trusty internet.

After development and scanning I was pleased that the exposures were pretty spot on.

The only problem was that I shot the roll at the 16 frame setting without the frame mask so all the images pretty much touched or overlapped a bit which gave an interesting look but I scanned each one individually and cropped slightly.

Anyway here are the images any comments most welcomed.

Lomo Color Neg 400 in the Sun ….

I had a roll of Lomo color neg 400 loaded in my Nikon FE2 for almost 3 weeks during the recent heatwave we experienced here in the UK. This was due to various reasons but mainly because of shooting other cameras like the Littlest Holga.

The FE2 was always in my bag so as you can see this roll features quite varied subject matter.

I really love this film stock and it is becoming one of my favorites especially as it is a stock that you can still buy and is a good price 🙂
